Walking In His Ways

Are you walking in the ways of the Lord or are you walking in the ways of the world?

Are you denying the deity of Jesus Christ? Do you reject the truth that Jesus is God the Son? Many of us would quickly answer no to these questions. However, there are some who claim to follow Jesus but deny that He is God by the way they live out their daily lives. God through His Word has proclaimed that Jesus is God, and has given us instruction on how to follow Him. When we aren’t walking in His ways and being obedient to God’s Word then we are denying Christ’s lordship and authority.

For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Romans 1:21

I’m excited to share with you Lesson 1: Walking In His Ways of my new Bible study, Walk His Way. For this study I have separated each lesson into four week sections. This is helpful if you would like to study with someone else or with a group of women who meet weekly or monthly. Each lesson starts with Jesus describing Himself in His own words. The next two sections look into what His words mean in light of the rest of Scripture. Then the last section of the lesson explores the way we should walk in light of who Jesus is and what He has commanded.

I mention in lesson one that this is really the most important lesson of the study. If we get this wrong then we will get everything else wrong. I encourage you if you haven’t already, to check out Anchored To Truth. In this Bible study we explore foundational truth found in Scripture that we must anchor ourselves to in order to follow Christ. One of those anchors that the world is seeking to oppose is that Jesus is God.

Jesus Never Said That

I literally cringe when I hear the words, Jesus never said that or Jesus never talked about that. If you say this, please stop. So often I hear people who claim to be following Christ say things like this. This statement shows that they clearly have no idea who they are following. Scripture tells us that Jesus is God and the manifestation of God’s Word (John 1:1-14). Therefore you can not separate Him from God the Father, and you can not separate His teachings from the rest of Scripture.

Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things. Romans 1:22-23

The same people who make these statements advocate for foolish ideas that Scripture does not support nor did Jesus say He supported (see, I can play this game too). For instance they claim to promote a “forward-thinking” approach to the teachings of Jesus Christ. This is a rejection of God’s sovereignty. It’s a foolish belief that we have a better understanding of the future than the Creator of all things (Proverbs 19:21). They also claim that we can choose our own spiritual path to God. God’s Word and Jesus in His own words tell us that no one comes to the Father except through Jesus Christ (John 14:6).

If the foundation of what you believe doesn’t come from God’s Word, then where does it come from? It would have to come from man, which means that you believe that man is greater than God. You also believe that man doesn’t need God and His direction, but again that is not what God’s Word tells us (Matthew 4:4). Let’s be honest, you worship self and images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things. You aren’t following Jesus, you’re following the world.

Suppressing The Truth

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. Romans 1:18-19

There are so many warnings in God’s Word about suppressing the truth of God’s Word. And yet it is the direction where so many churches and ministries today are headed. Some believe that they have a better chance of reaching the lost by supporting things that are ungodly and unrighteous. God’s Word tells us that we were saved to renounce ungodliness so that we may live godly lives in the present age (Titus 2:11-15).

“If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you, and you must rule over it.” Genesis 4:7

God warned Cain before he killed His brother Abel that there was a right path to follow and a wrong path. The right path was being obedient to God and His Ways and this path promised reward. The wrong path was disobedience to God which would lead to sin being his master. When we refuse to surrender to the authority of God then we refuse to follow the path laid before us in God’s Word (Psalm 119:105) and sin becomes our god.

Walk His Way

You shall walk in all the way that the Lord your God has commanded you, that you may live, and that it may go well with you, and that you may live long in the land that you shall possess. Deuteronomy 5:33

This is not a suggestion, this is a command. God through His Word instructs us to follow Him, walk in His ways, be obedient to His commands and promises it will go well for us. However, He tells us that if we don’t then sin will rule over us and the consequences of our sin will be great. We have a choice, we can submit to the authority of the God who created us and died for our sins or we can choose to allow sin to be our master.

Our choice doesn’t change God’s authority, but it sure does change the direction of our life. Apart from God there is no joy, no reward and no peace. We will never live out our created design and purpose without the Holy Spirit and the direction of God in our lives. So you must choose, are you going to follow Jesus, or are you going to follow the world?

Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death. John 8:51
